FIRST STEPS AFTER DEATH

Nothing adequately prepares us for the initial shock of losing a loved one to death. Feelings of panic and helplessness may be overwhelming, but it’s important to know that you are not alone. Start by taking care of yourself and surrounding yourself with family, friends and professionals upon whom you can rely for support.

Notify family and friends.

Call immediate family members first, parents, children, siblings and grandparents of the deceased, no matter what time of day. Grief researchers say those close to the deceased feel left out if they aren't told about death immediately.

Legal guidance

As much as death is about loss, it is also a legal status that comes with its own tasks and paperwork. Contact your lawyer if you need any help!

Call a funeral director

The emotional impact of death understandably makes it difficult to focus on the details that go into organizing a funeral. A funeral director and staff can ease the burden by guiding you through every step and decision.
